The Elbe Trail is developing and is a model of coordinated cycling

The Elbe Trail Coordination Group in the Czech Republic met this time in the Ústí nad Labem Region. There were representatives of all the regions through which this long-distance cycle route passes, i.e. Hradec Králové, Pardubice, Central Bohemia and Ústí nad Labem, as well as the Partnership Foundation, which is the coordinator of the trail in the country, and the Czech Central Highlands Agency, which takes care of the trail in the Ústí nad Labem region.

The main source of information about the entire length of the Elbe Trail is the traditionally published Handbuch, a guide to the trail for 2020. It was officially christened at the Holiday World Prague fair and during the time of restrictions due to the epidemic, it was distributed in the regions to be available to tourists and visitors to the trail during the main summer season. The Handbuch also already uses the new Czech-German logo of the trail. The guidebook contains information not only about services around the trail, but also about bridges, ferries, services, etc.

The next item on the agenda was the preparation of the annual conference of the Elbe Trail. It will take place on 14-15 September in the Ústí nad Labem Region in Roudnice nad Labem. "The conference will be international, i.e. with the participation of colleagues from Germany. We want to support and deepen cross-border cooperation and present the Elbe Trail as a route of truly European importance," said Pavel Hajšman, head of the Regional Development Department in the Ústí nad Labem Region. In addition to the conference and the cycling excursion, there will also be a grand opening of the newly built Račice - Hněvice section, which is currently under construction. In addition to the two sections implemented this year by the Ústí nad Labem Region, construction is also underway in other places. In Pardubice, a cycle lane in Rosice will be completed this year, in the Central Bohemia Region one section is under construction and another 15km section should be started this year.

The fact that cycling is a popular way of spending free time was confirmed by the outputs from the meters in Roudnice, Velké Březno and Lysá nad Labem. At all three of them, an increase in passes was recorded during the quarantine period compared to the same period last year, by 40-90% depending on the location.

The trail is continuously renewed or supplemented with furniture, and the company SEV.EN will build charging stations for electric bicycles. The Green Elbe Trail project was about expanding the range of services for sustainable tourism according to German certifications. The functioning partnership and coordination of the Elbe Trail could become the basis for the establishment of a National Coordination Centre for Cycling Tourism, which would coordinate activities and marketing and address the conditions for the development of cycling throughout the country.

The Elbe Trail is one of the most popular European long-distance routes (currently ranked 2nd in Germany) and is also one of the best tourist products in the Ústí nad Labem Region. Today, it can be an ideal attraction for visitors from all over the country, as it offers the opportunity to move in the fresh air in a pleasant and varied environment, yet in a comfortable design and with an ever-growing range of gastronomy and other services and experiences. The economic benefit of the cycle path to the region was calculated at around CZK 60 million per season based on a survey last year, and it still has potential for growth. At present, cycling can become an engine of local tourism.
