The mysterious pond - Roudnice nad Labem

When you visit the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the adjacent former monastery in Roudnice nad Labem, you can admire not only the beautiful architecture, statues, paintings and the "Paradise Court", but also see the mysterious underground lake.

If you are not afraid, you can walk through a small gate and look out of a cave with a low ceiling into a flooded cellar room. Legend has it that a golden duck lives in an underground lake, which sometimes lays a golden egg, so look well underfoot… And where did the pond come from? There are several springs under the monastery and one of them flooded the cellar. Another is called Rudný pramen (ore spring) because of the reddish color of the water. The town of Roudnice it self is named after it. You will see the ore spring on the street - it flows out from under the wall of the monastery garden.
