Vernerice Central Highlands

The Vernerice Central Highlands is an interesting locality between Litoměřice, Ústí nad Labem, Česká Lípa and Děčín.

It is an area wounded by the considerable demolition of sacral buildings, some of which have disappeared completely, while only fragments remain. The centre of the area is the town of Verneřice with the church of St. Anne, last rebuilt after a fire in 1774. Less fortunate was the village of Merboltice, where only the bell tower of St. Catherine's Church remains. The church was demolished in 1975, although its demolition was more expensive than the cost of repair. Even worse was the pilgrimage church of the Holy Trinity on Boží Hill near Verneřice, built in 1732-1733. Today we can only find a few fragments of the building on a raised hill with an avenue leading to it. On the site of nettles and infestations stood a beautiful Baroque building, which disappeared only for ideological reasons. A similar fate befell the church in Mukařov, the chapel in Touchořiny and the chapel in Leština. In some places it is possible to trace where the building stood, in others we cannot even find this place.
