Chapel of St. William

In the period 1726-1728, the owner of the Roudnice estate, Filip Hyacint of Lobkowicz, and his second wife, Anna Maria Vilemína, the Princess of Althan, had the chapel of St. William (patron saint of all convicts) built on the site of the former execution site called "On the Shadows."

The construction was carried out by the then most important North Bohemian builder of the High Baroque, Octavio Broggio, who at that time was leading the reconstruction of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in the Augustinian monastery.

The building is unique for its rectangular base with a dynamically curved facade, with side pilasters supporting the laying with a richly profiled cornice. The architecturally simple appearance of the interior is highlighted by frescoes by Václav Vavřinec Reiner. The corners depict the four main virtues (Faith, Hope, Love, and Justice). Above them is a fresco representing St. Trinity with a dove enthroned in the clouds, surrounded and carried by angels. The great cross then symbolizes the torture of the Lord. The main altar is decorated with an altarpiece depicting the patron saint of the chapel, St. William. Thanks to the perfect harmony of all painting, sculptural and architectural elements, the chapel is one of the jewels of the Czech High Baroque.
