Chapel of St. Joseph

Chapel of St. Joseph (patron saint of the dying and the good death) was built in years 1767-1777 as a hospital chapel at the Prague Gate.

It was therefore the property of the hospital, which existed here from the first half of the 17th century and originally stood by the river Elbe, next to the church of St. Václav (founded in the 1930s by Jan of Dražice). During the Thirty Years' War, however, it was damaged and moved to the southwest corner of the city (today's Neruda and Riegrova streets).

It is a Baroque structure, consisting of a hall with a simple portal entrance and the space of the chapel itself, a square room vaulted into a dome topped by a so-called lantern with four windows.

The inner vault of the dome is decorated with a painting by an unknown author, depicting the four evangelists and the figural composition "The Engagement of the Virgin Mary" and "Escape to Egypt". The altar made of artificial marble dates from the second half of the 18th century.

On Saturday, September 8, 2018, will the chapel of St. Joseph open from 10:00 to 18:00 (entery only to the grille). The monument is accessible free of charge as part of the European Heritage Days.

As part of the European Heritage Days, you have the opportunity to compete using the EHD application. Rules and other information about the competition can be found on the EHD 2018 competition page.
