The Hláska Tower

The Hláska tower is the only preserved remnant of the old Roudnice fortification.

The former Old Town was located in the area of today's Jan z Dražic Square and Poděbradova Street. Originally there was a wooden wall around it, but the brick wall with the city gates was built only by Archbishop Jan Očko of Vlašim after 1378. As part of the fortification, a Gothic observation and announcement tower, today's Hláska, was built on the elevated site. It was never damaged until the second half of the 17th century, except in 1665, when it was almost destroyed in the great fire of the town. In the 18th century it was reconstructed and adapted for a new purpose. A water tank was placed here for the fountain at the Horse Market, today's Hus Square.
